iPhone Dev team has released Redsn0w that includes support for untethered iOS 5.1.1 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. It includes Rocky Racoon and untethered iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak developed by pod2g and planetbeing that was used in Absinthe 2.0.x jailbreak.
Note: if you are already jailbroken tethered, stop here. All you have to do is just launch Cydia, search for and install Rocky Raccoon untether. You do not need to rejailbreak your device.
Please do not forget to backup your iPhone before you proceed.
Redsn0w 0.9.12 supports untethered jailbreak.
Redsn0w 0.9.12 supports iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS running on iOS 5.1.1.
Please ensure your iPhone is on iOS 5.1.1 (Settings –> General –> About –> Version should be 5.1.1) before proceeding.
Please note that jailbreaking your iPhone may void your warranty and hence proceed with caution and at your own risk.
Please ensure you are running latest version of iTunes.
First and most important, please make a full backup of your iPhone, the upgrade to iOS 5.1.1 before beginning (if you havent done already), quit iTunes beforehand as well. Depending on hardware you may or may not need to go into
Download Redsn0w 0.9.12 or latest and launch redsn0w as Administrator
Connect the iOS device to the computer and click “Jailbreak”
For iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and iPad 3 users, click “Next” and let redsn0w do the magic and run the jailbreak
For iPhone 4 & 3GS, iPod touch 3rd and 4th gen, and iPad 1 users, you must first put your device into DFU mode.
To place your device into DFU mode, is simple and you should do the following:
Step 1: Connect your device to your computer
Step 2: Hold the Home + Power buttons on your device simultaneously for 10 seconds.
Step 3: Release the Power button without releasing the home button. Continue holding Home for another 10 seconds.
Step 4: Release Home, and your screen should stay completely black. If so, chances are you successfully entered into DFU mode.
A short video guide how to do it:
Note: To get your device out of DFU mode, simply hold Home + Power for 10 seconds and release. The Apple logo should then appear shortly and thats it, your iDevice is out of DFU Mode.
After you have entered in DFU Mode (as we mentioned this is for iPhone 4 & 3GS, iPod touch 3rd and 4th gen, and iPad 1 users) Redsn0w will run and install the jailbreak going trough these three steps:
- Finishing up
and once these steps are completed, the device will reboot itself and you will be able to find Cydia on the home screen to verify the device is jailbroken.
When finished, you can reboot the device freely without having to connect it to a computer for a tethered boot. The ability to freely reboot is the primary difference between a tethered vs untethered jailbreak.
Simple isn’t it?
